Junior High Quiz Bowl Success

On Saturday, 12/2/2023, the Harmony Grove Junior High Quiz Bowl team competed in the largest Quiz Bowl tournament in the state of Arkansas. The tournament, held at Conway High School, is known as the “Friends of Quiz Bowl,” and featured 96 teams and 48 moderators. The 96 teams were split into six different divisions, with 16 teams in each division, with 1A-4A composing three divisions, and 5A-7A composing the other three. Like most Quiz Bowl tournaments, the morning slate of ‘pool play’ determined our afternoon bracket seeding, which was single-elimination. In the morning we went undefeated, beating Clinton by a score of 430-150, then Palestine Wheatley, by a score of 380-180. Our last game of the morning was against Highland, which was a close win, with a score of 290-275. In the afternoon we were given the 3 seed, and our first match was against South Side Bee Branch, who we defeated with a score of 405-125. In the quarter-finals we played against Palestine-Wheatley again, and beat them 345-80. In the semi-finals we defeated St. Joseph’s, out of Fayetteville, with a score of 320-295. In the championship round, we came up 2 questions short to Haas Hall Academy of Bentonville (pre-season #1, and defending 2A State Champs), with a final score of 295-310. Team Captain, Conner Boyd impressed with 58 toss-up questions answered correctly, along with several lightning rounds that he “ran” by himself, earning our team the 20 point 3rd quarter bonus!
